Step by Step

Buy a ticket for the Teatro Colón and you will enter a temple of world opera. An expert guide will accompany you inside to tell you about its birth at the height of the Belle Epoque and the artists who performed within its walls. The visit lasts about an hour and touches on the main attractions:

  • Salón Dorado: this ambience reveals the ambitions of the high bourgeoisie of the time, who wanted to turn Buenos Aires into the Paris of Latin America. The large and richly decorated columns stand out.
  • Main Foyer: you enter through a monumental staircase made of Carrara marble and, once inside, you can admire the imposing columns made of red Verona marble.
  • Gallery of Busts: an area that pays homage to the masters of opera. Among the many statues are those of Mozart, Beethoven and Rossini.

It is also worth looking up to appreciate the enormous dome decorated by the Argentinian Raúl Soldi. The theatre is famous for its acoustics which prevent sounds from "bouncing", distributing them throughout the interior.

Before moving to its current location, the Teatro Colón was located on the famous Plaza de Mayo, near the Casa Rosada. Finally, in 1885, the President of the Republic, Rafael Núñez, ordered the construction of a new structure, which was officially inaugurated on October 12th, 1892. As it was the 4th centenary of the discovery of America, it was named in honour of the Genoese explorer.

The theatre is located at 628 Cerrito Street, in the heart of Buenos Aires. It is very easy to get there thanks to the metro. You can take the B line (Carlos Pellegrini or Uruguay stop), C (Lavalle) or D (Tribunales). Alternatively, you can take the bus (colectivo). Several lines stop in front of or within walking distance of the entrance.

It's incredibly big, I had no idea that opera houses were of such magnitude.

In my opinion, at night the lighting makes it look more majestic than during the day, during the day it seems to be some old house, I liked being able to see inside.

From the outside you get the idea that the place is going to be something big and something full of luxuries, but once inside it really exceeds your expectations.
