Step by Step

If you buy a ticket for this show, you can enjoy the Legong dance, characterised by fast movements, floral headdresses, defiant postures and choreography studied down to the smallest detail. It lasts about an hour and a half and is held at the Royal Palace in Ubud, a splendid example of Balinese architecture.

According to popular belief, this traditional dance originated in the 19th century and is linked to the figure of the Prince of Sukawati. While lying feverish in bed, he dreamt that two young girls were dancing to the notes of the gamelan, a traditional musical ensemble using instruments such as the rebab (bow), flutes, percussion (kendang), zither and bamboo xylophones.

After recovering from his illness, he turned his dream into a reality, creating a show to entertain the royal family. There are several versions today, but the most recurring theme is that of a confrontation between two brothers that escalates into war. The frenetic rhythms of the conflict are perfectly suited to be transformed into the sinuous movements of the dancers.

The Royal Palace of Ubud stands on a bend of the Wos River and has a very simple, typically Balinese architectural style. Its structure is complemented by the temples of Puri Saren Agung and Pura Marajan Agung, which form a sacred territory for the locals.
