Step by Step

Attend an authentic Japanese tea ceremony and find out all about this ancient and traditional ritual from the land of the rising sun. For about 1 hour, you will learn about the steps that are followed, the utensils that are used and the importance of the decoration and layout of the rooms in the celebration of the ceremony.

You will learn about all these facts from an expert host from one of the three main tea ceremony schools in Kyoto. From the host, you will also learn about the history of Japan and the importance of the tea ceremony in Japanese culture.

The tea ceremony, also known as "Chanoyu" or "Sado", is a traditional cultural practice in Japan that focuses on the preparation and presentation of powdered green tea called "matcha" . The tea ceremony originated in Japan more than 400 years ago and is considered an art form and an expression of Zen philosophy.

In the tea ceremony, the host and guests perform a series of rituals and precise gestures that symbolise harmony, respect, purity and tranquillity. The ceremony can be formal or informal, depending on the place and context, and can last several hours. A small portion of tea is served to each guest in a special container called a 'chawan', and the importance of enjoying each moment and appreciating the beauty in simple things is emphasised.

Once you have learned the basics, you will experience an authentic tea ceremony, which will end with you enjoying a hot and delicious matcha tea drink, accompanied by a seasonal Japanese sweet .
