The Hill of Crosses is an extraordinary place with a large number of crosses of various sizes and designs. Each cross represents a prayer, a wish or a personal memory. The exact origins of the tradition are unclear, but it is believed to have begun in the 19th century as a way of expressing devotion and resistance against foreign rule.
Despite attempts to destroy or remove the crosses by various occupying powers, the hill has been continually rebuilt and expanded by devout people, making it a symbol of Lithuania.
The distance between Riga and the Hill of Crosses is about 160 kilometres, which can be covered in about three hours by car.
During this tour you will also have the opportunity to visit the historic town of Jelgava in Latvia. This town, the fourth largest in the Baltic country, has a rich history and is known for its architectural heritage.
