Guided tours of the Picasso Museum are very popular in the city of Barcelona; and yes, it is totally worthwhile to visit this space in the company of an expert guide due to the large collection of works on display here.

There are some 4,000 original works ranging from Picasso' s youth to his last creative phases.

If you want to take a guided tour of the Picasso Museum (which I recommend) there are two main ways.

    Organised tours

Several companies in Barcelona organise guided tours of the Picasso Museum. Depending on the company you hire, this experience can combine a visit to the museum with other places important to the artist's life and work.

It is important to remember that Picasso felt a great attachment to Barcelona, a city where he lived for many years and was also a student at the prestigious art academy La Llotja, where his father was a teacher.

    • Price: Approximately 30€ and includes admission to the museum without queuing.

    Guided tours of the museum

The museum itself organises guided tours through the permanent Picasso exhibition. Reservations must be made by purchasing tickets directly on their website and places are subject to availability within a limited time frame and on limited days.

    • Guided tours in Catalan: Sundays at 12:45h.
    • Guided toursin Spanish: Sundays at 12:30 p.m.
    • Guided tours in English: Sundays at 11 a.m.
    • Guided tours in French: Sundays at 11:15 a.m.
    • Price: About 6€ for the tour and about 12€ for the entrance to the museum.

If you prefer, you can buy your entrance ticket to the Picasso Museum directly at the ticket office. Just bear in mind that the museum's ticket office operates every day until 30 minutes before the official closing time, so if you schedule your visit for the end of a day of exploration you will need to organise your route and arrive in plenty of time.

Please note that the museum operates on a limited capacity and if tickets for a day are sold out early the ticket office will close earlier.

Therefore, the best option is always to buy tickets in advance using a website such as Hellotickets. This avoids not only the entrance queue but also the ever-present possibility of running out of tickets during peak tourist seasons such as the summer monthsin Barcelona.

Of course they are! The Picasso Museum is included in one of the most popular tourist cards in the city: The Museum Pass Barcelona. A card designed to be valid for 12 months that grants visitors entry to 6 of the main museums in the Catalan capital, most of them with a strong focus on the visual arts and the avant-garde movements to which Picasso belonged.

Other museums you can visit if you buy this pass are: the Antoni Tàpies Foundation and the Joan Miró Foundation, both great representatives of Catalan art from the beginning of the last century.

    • Price: The entrance fee for the Museum Pass is around 35€, it is free for children but they must be accompanied by an adult who buys the pass.

Located on Carrer de Montcada, in the El Born district. The Picasso Museum is located in one of the oldest areas of Barcelona. Its strategic location makes it easy to get to this part of the city and you will find several means of transport to move to this particular area.

Here are the most popular and recommended ones.

    • Tourist bus One of the best ways to get around the different monuments and tourist attractions in Barcelona. There are several buses but if you hire the Hop On Hop Off, the red route that stops in the Gothic Quarter is very close to the museum.
    • Barcelona Metro: Jaume I metro station (lines L1 and L4) is a 4-minute walk from the museum entrance.
    • Barcelona Tram: If you use the city tram, the Wellington stop is a 15-minute walk from the museum entrance.
    • Barcelona Bus: Numerous bus stops stop in the vicinity of the museum; the closest ones are Princesa - Montcada and Pla De Palau less than 5 minutes away.

Is it advisable to go to the Picasso Museum in Barcelona with children?

Absolutely! The most popular Picasso's art is closely related to children's art forms, mainly in children under 8 years of age. This fact makes it very easy for young people to bond with the artist's form of expression and to pay close attention to the works.

I think that the best way to integrate children into the experience is to hire an expert guide capable of explaining in detail the most important and interesting aspects, as well as the questions linked to its evolution.

If you visit Barcelona with children and family, this can be an enriching experience for everyone.

The museum's permanent collection explores the earliest stages of the artist's training and evolution like no other. This translates into a collection of works that not many linked to his most popular cubist and modernist works. In this respect, I think it is worth paying attention to the following...

    • Formative periodin Barcelona: During this period he produced impressive works such as the portrait called "Man with a Beret", when he was only 14 years old, or the painting "Science and Charity" at the age of 15.
    • Blue period: in the Museum you will find many works belonging to Picasso 's blue period, one of the most outstanding being "Woman with a Bonnet".
    • Pink period: from this period the work "Harlequin**"** stands out
    • Collection of Las Meninas: You will surely recognise Picasso's reinterpretation of the famous painting by Velazques entitled "Las Meninas", one of the most important works in the Prado Museum in Madrid. Picasso's obsession with this work was so great that he even painted 58 versions of his own, most of which can be found in this museum.

In the museum's collection of works you will find more than 4000 original pieces in the permanent collection alone but the tour through the different spaces can be done without any problems in about 90 minutes.

As you'll notice when you visit the museum, it occupies the premises of what was once a group of palaces or upper-class dwellings in the Gothic Quarter, one of the oldest areas of the city.

Five Gothic-style buildings located on Carrer Montcada have served, after numerous renovations, to give life to the exhibition space we enjoy today. This is why, alternating with the collections, you will come across small spaces with an original 18th-century design.

Despite the extensive collection, the tour is quick and easy.
