12 Things to Do in Mallorca in March
Enjoy the greatest variety of plans in Mallorca during the month of March. Fairs, sporting activities and gastronomy, among others, come together on the largest island of the Balearic Islands.
March is an ideal time to enjoy the charms of the island of Mallorca to the full. Spring is approaching, the daylight hours are beginning to lengthen and the temperature is getting warmer. At this time of year there are still not many tourists, and this is always a great way to enjoy everything there is to see and do in Mallorca.
The island's events calendar is full of alternatives at this time of year, with options for all ages and tastes. Whether you are a nature lover or prefer events with lots of people, you are sure to find a plan that suits you.
1. Escape to the Caves of Drach and discover them with hardly any people around
Rarely will you have the chance to visit a tourist spot without every corner of it being crowded with people. Don't you hate it when all your summer photos show people in the background?
The island of Majorca has some beautiful places that are a must-see. But one of the best excursions to do in Mallorca is the one that takes you to the Caves of Drach. Located in the village of Porto Cristo, it is an idyllic place where you will also find a large underground lake that can be crossed by boat.
Thanks to its average temperature of between 17 and 20 degrees inside, you can enjoy these beautiful caves at any time of the year, but taking advantage of your March getaway to Mallorca to explore them is a great idea since it is not high tourist season on the island and you will be able to enjoy the tour at your leisure.
2. Go to the bay of Palma to see the best sailors
Coming to enjoy the beauty of the Bay of Palma is always a spectacle. But it is even more so if you find it full of sailing boats. It is a good time to take a boat trip around Mallorca.
During the first weeks of March, the Mallorcan coastline fills up with crews to compete in the Mallorca Sailing Center Regatta. This event is a worldwide benchmark that is used as training for the Princesa Sofía Mallorca, which takes place in the same waters. The aspirants give their all to achieve the best results during the three days of the event.
3. Explore the Mallorcan highlands with a quad tour
If you like adventure, make a note on your list of plans in Mallorca to do one of the quad tours around the island. Thanks to these guided routes mostly through the Majorcan mountain range you can explore paths and roads with a unique mountain landscape with the Balearic Sea in the background.
Your guide will give you the instructions to know how to drive the quad and you will have all the safety equipment at your disposal. Imagine discovering the Serra de Tramuntana on one of these vehicles. If you have never been on a quad bike before, I recommend you try the experience and enjoy the beautiful natural landscapes of the island of Mallorca.
Celebrate World Nature Day
All lovers of the environment are invited to celebrate a day of awareness-raising on World Nature Day, on 3 March. In Lloret de Vistalegre, which is located in the most central point of the island, several activities are organised every year to promote care for the planet. On a pleasant walk, they work to clean up a very important natural space in the area such as Sa Comuna.
4. Enjoy the best craftsmanship at the Fira del Fang, the largest gathering of potters
If you are a lover of handicrafts, you have an unmissable date in Marratxí. From mid-March onwards, potters from Marratxi and from all over the world, especially from the island of Mallorca, come here. This fair is considered to be a benchmark in the sector.
You can not only admire these handmade treasures. You can also take a piece home with you as a souvenir or even make it yourself, as during the week of the fair there are different activities such as workshops and conferences.
Another great plan is to book a tour of the traditional markets, where you will visit the Alcudia market, where you will find a wide variety of handmade products, textiles and foodstuffs; the Inca market, internationally famous for its high-quality leather and footwear products; or the Sineu market, known for its neighbourhood collaboration and for having products of all kinds.
5. Experience sport in Escorca with the Natursport Fair
For sports enthusiasts, on the last weekend of March the municipality of Escorca offers the Natursport Fair, a series of outdoor activities suitable for all levels.
Mountain biking, climbing and trekking are among the most popular. But there are not only activities for adults. The little ones are invited with activities exclusively for them, such as a climbing wall and the Ultrakids, a race that they will enjoy to the maximum.
And if you like cycling, why not join an electric bike tour around Mallorca? You'll ride for 3 hours around the main monuments of Palma de Mallorca. No less than 27 km accompanied by a tour guide who will explain the history and secrets of the capital.
6. Warm up your engines to get fully involved in the Rally Clásico Isla de Mallorca
For 3 days Mallorca celebrates one of the most important motor events in the area, the Rally de la Isla de Mallorca. More than 500 km spread over 14 sections are filled with race and petrol in the categories of competition, regularity and youngtimers, which ensures that we see mythical, classic and historic cars
. The place where all the registered cars meet is in Puerto Portals, the most luxurious port of the island.
And if motoring and speed are your thing, I recommend you book a Formula 1 car tour in which you will get your adrenaline pumping as you drive through some of the wonderful landscapes that the island has to offer, such as Valldemossa, Sóller, the port of Andratx, the coast of Calviá, the Calas de Estellenc, Malgrats or the viewpoint of Sa Foradada.
7. Stroll among the almond trees in blossom
Just a few weeks before spring arrives, the almond trees are in bloom in Mallorca, turning the landscape a captivating white with hints of pink. A visit here is a must if you are on the island.
Little by little you will notice how the scent of spring begins to make itself felt. Strolling through these landscapes is a luxury that is gaining more and more followers. So much so that in Germany they have created specific trips to Mallorca to see the almond trees in bloom.
To enjoy this marvel you can visit the villages of Lloseta, Marrachí or Selva, in the Raiguer region; the villages of Manacor and Son Servera, in the Levante Mallorquín region; or book an excursion to Sóller and Valldemosa.
8. Enjoy nature on horseback
The warm but not excessively hot weather, the light of spring and nature in full bloom make this the perfect time of year to book a horseback ride in Mallorca. A great plan for lovers of these beautiful animals.
The activity takes place in small groups in the valleys of Randa, in the south of the island, where you can ride through vineyards, monasteries, 13th century buildings and beautiful natural landscapes.
Whether you are an experienced rider or this is your first contact with the horse, this activity is for you, as you will receive a theoretical and practical lesson and then take the reins to put into practice everything you have learnt. Of course, you must have an acceptable level of fitness to be able to do this wonderful excursion.
9. The most famous Irish festival is also celebrated in Mallorca
Who hasn't heard of St. Patrick's Day? This day is celebrated all over the world in memory of the patron saint of the island of Ireland. Mallorca turns green and surrounds itself with shows, music and beer, lots of beer.
The focal point of the festival is in Santa Ponça, in Calvià. The municipality brings out its heavy artillery to imitate the purest Irish style. Music and beer are two of the main protagonists, with live performances in every Irish pub in town.
10. An Agricultural Fair with tradition in Son Ferriol
For more than 20 years, a large-scale agricultural fair has been held in Son Ferriol, just outside Palma, at the end of March. This quiet town brings together professionals from the sector and also, of course, many curious visitors who want to learn about the native species of livestock, such as the elegant Mallorcan horses or the Mallorcan black pigs.
Throughout the day there are exhibitions of birds of prey and horse-breeding competitions.
In addition to the animals, the fair has several exhibitions, a hundred or so agricultural machines and work tools, and a whole host of other exhibits. And as in any good fair, you can't forget to try the typical local food at one of the stalls, or buy some of the artisan products.
11. Day of the Balearic Islands, the island's most representative festival
Every year on 1 March, the Balearic Islands dress up in their best clothes to celebrate the most important day of the community. This day commemorates the signing of the Statute of Autonomy in 1983.
Most of the activities that take place on this day are held in Palma de Mallorca. In the Parc de Sa Feixina you will have the chance to sample the best typical local food, which is laid out along numerous stalls. Accompanied by street entertainment throughout the city, Mallorcans leave their homes in a celebratory mood.
It is a good time to visit the city's main buildings. These days they open their doors to the public to share a glimpse of their valuable heritage with anyone who wants to come along.
Taste Mallorcan food
And they say that you can't get to know a city without tasting the delicacies that its gastronomy has to offer. The ensaimada is the most typical sweet that continues to triumph. Another classic is sobrasada. But there are many more to choose from, such as the traditional arròs brut or coca de Trampó, which is a pizza-like base with a bed of vegetables.
The best way to try a bit of everything is to go on a gastronomic tour around Mallorca to visit the best places with the best typical food on the island or book an olive oil and wine tour around the island, where you will taste these two Mediterranean products.
12. Have fun at the Fira del Ram attractions
At this time of year, from the end of February until April, Mallorcans flock to the Son Fusteret industrial estate to enjoy one of the most eagerly awaited events. This is the Fira del Ram, a fair where more than 170 attractions are installed.
Do you dare to ride the giant Ferris wheel or one of the roller coasters? Water rides, horror r ides, and for the bravest there are those that turn upside down and spin at full speed.
Locals and tourists alike flock to this fairground to enjoy the sound and light show. The festive atmosphere is joined by the smell of the characteristic sweet of the fairs, a bit of cotton candy for the children while the grown-ups get a dozen churros.
The weather during the month of March in Mallorca
When March arrives, winter is coming to an end and spring temperatures are beginning to make themselves felt. In Mallorca there is hardly any trace of the cold during the day. The average daytime temperatures are between 15 and 18ºC. A pleasant temperature that allows us to get rid of the woollen jumpers and dust off our between-season clothes from the wardrobe.
But don't be fooled, despite the sun and clear skies, at night the temperature continues to drop to an average of 8-9ºC. So remember to have some warm clothes on hand just in case.
The beaches of Mallorca in March
We are used to associating beach tourism with the hottest months of the year. This is a mistake, especially if we take into account that summer is when most people come to look for this type of destination.
Mallorca has a mild climate that allows us to enjoy the beach during the spring and autumn months. The sun is not yet strong, but that does not prevent us from lying on the beach or taking a dip in the middle of the day.
If you are looking for a place where, in addition to sightseeing, you can enjoy fun plans, Mallorca is the perfect candidate. Prices are more affordable than the rest of the year during the low season and the crowds have not yet arrived. Take the opportunity to disconnect on the Island of Calm.
