The Alcazaba in Malaga is undoubtedly a monument that reminds us of the Islamic period in Spain. I show you all the prices and offers you can take advantage of to visit it.
From free admission one day of the week to reduced price tickets, you have many cost options to enter the Alcazaba, making it an excellent plan to include in your list of things to see and do in Malaga.
Entering the Alcazaba of Malaga is best when you have more than one day to visit the city, because not only do you have the opportunity to visit this place, but also the great Gibralfaro Castle which is located on the top of the mountain of the same name.
How much do tickets for the Alcazaba of Malaga cost?
General admission to the Alcazaba has a standard price throughout the year and is generally around 3.50 euros. You should know that within the complex where the Alcazaba is located, you will also find the Gibralfaro Castle, so if you want to visit each of the monuments separately, you will have to pay approximately 3,50 euros for each one.
Although they are in the same place, both are far enough apart that you will have to pay an individual entrance fee to see them. In the case of the Alcazaba, it is located in the foothills of the mountain. Going back to the general admission ticket prices, you should know that these ticket prices apply to the general public.
No matter what date you want to go or what time of day you go, in general these tickets always cost around 3.50 euros. This price includes your own tour of all the facilities, where you must always respect the rules during your visit.
Tickets can also be purchased for groups of more than 10 people. In case you want to visit the Alcazaba with your family or friends, you can do so by paying a little less per ticket. For groups of at least 10 people this ticket can cost around 2,50 euros per person.
Ticket prices for the Alcazaba of Malaga at the ticket office
Although there are certain ways in which you can buy tickets to this place online, generally you have to pay for the tickets mainly at the ticket office, which is the way in which this enclosure admits the payment of the entrance.
Regarding the payment methods, you will find out when you arrive at the ticket office, what types of payment they will accept to buy your ticket. It is important to know that to buy your ticket at the ticket office, you have to arrive about 20 to 30 minutes before the time you want to start the tour.
As this is basically the main way you can buy tickets, there are usually a lot of people on site, waiting to take their ticket and start the tour. In a way the physical ticket is advantageous because you get a nice souvenir of your visit to the place.
As in the case of individual tickets, tickets for large groups of more than 10 people must be purchased at the ticket office to get the discount, and likewise, I recommend that you arrive at the site at least 20 to 30 minutes before the tour you expect to do.
Ticket prices to the Alcazaba of Malaga for children
The Alcazaba is accessible to the general public, but in the case of children, unlike other museums and other places of tourist, historical and cultural interest in Spain and specifically in Malaga, tickets are usually priced the same as those for adults.
In this way, children have to pay a full entrance fee of 3.5 dollars each. This way, you know that to enter the place with children, you will have to count the entrance fee for them, at full price.
The price for schools may vary a little, because a special guided tour service is offered, dramatised or with the special creation of certain gymkhanas that will motivate children to want to know more details of the story that is told inside the Alcazaba. In this sense, tickets for each child can be between 6 and 8 euros.
Price of combined tickets to the Alcazaba of Malaga and the Gibralfaro Castle
As you know, both the Gibralfaro Castle and the Alcazaba are monuments that are located within the same complex on the mountain of Gibralfaro, however, they are not monuments that are so close to each other as to understand that a visit to one is a visit to the other.
To begin with, you need to know that to visit both museums you will need between 3 and 3 and a half hours, because in each of them you can easily spend around an hour and a half touring each space inside. In any case, if you have the time to do it, it is a good tour to see for a whole day or at least half a day.
In case you want to visit both sites at the same time, you have two options. One is to buy tickets individually and enjoy Gibralfaro Castle and the Alcazaba individually.
The other option is to buy a combined ticket for the full tour of both monuments, which you can buy at the ticket office on the day you go. In the latter case, the general admission ticket will cost approximately 5.50 euros per person. In case you attend with a group of more than 10 people, you can pay at least 4 euros per ticket.
Is it free to enter the Alcazaba in Malaga and is it worth it?
Like many of the top 10 museums in Malaga, such as the Carmen Thyssen Museum, the Alcazaba is one of those museums that offer you a few moments to enjoy the facilities for free. This is very interesting to know in case your trip to Malaga coincides with the museum's free day.
Free admission for the general public is available every Sunday, a day of the week that is generally chosen by the rest of the museums to offer free visits. For both the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle, free entry on Sundays starts at 14:00.
There is no free admission based on age or disability, so whenever you go to the Alcazaba or Gibralfaro Castle, you will have to pay either the full entrance fee or a reduced one, as the case may be.
Who can enter the Alcazaba for free?
When the monument is open free of charge, all visitors are guaranteed access, without exception. As you know, all the people who want to enter this place outside Sundays, which is the day when the free admission is activated, must pay to do so.
It is important that before going to the Alcazaba for free, you take into account the amount of people who usually visit these monuments taking advantage of the free hour, so I recommend you to go at least two hours before closing time, to be able to enjoy the visit inside both places to the maximum.
Reduced rates to enter the Alcazaba of Malaga
Since there are no free admission benefits for any kind of public in the Alcazaba, they do offer reduced price tickets, which means that they ask for a lower price than the general admission if you meet the conditions requested at the ticket office.
Reduced tickets only apply to students, people with a disability of at least 33%, people over 65 years old, retired people and unemployed people. In case you do not fill any of these places, then you will have to pay your full admission fee.
The ticket discount is more than 50 % of the normal ticket price, whereby the price for reduced tickets is approximately 1,50 Euro. These ticket discounts apply every day of the week including public holidays when the venue is open to the public.
How much is the entrance fee if you want to add a guided tour of the Alcazaba of Malaga?
Guided tours of the Alcazaba are well worth the money, especially as this type of guided tour will give you a much deeper insight into the rich history and culture that lies behind these walls. Whether you include the guided tour or not, this is a tour that is considered one of the best excursions in Malaga for its historical and cultural contribution.
The place offers different types of tours to choose from if you want to enjoy visiting the monuments without missing out on any details. The guided tours are classified into: classic tours, private tour, school tour and free tour.
Of course, each has its own price list and timetable. I'll tell you a little more about their prices, if you want to know more information about the Alcazaba's opening hours, I recommend you to read more about it.
Classic Tour
In the case of the first option, which is the classic tour, it is a guided tour with the experts of the place who will tell you everything you need to know about the Alcazaba and its history. You will also be able to share with other tourists who are in the area to get a closer look at this pair of monuments.
This is a tour that you can do alone, with your family or with your friends, also this kind of tours are activities that you can do in Malaga with children. It is for all the public. As for the price, this can range between 4 and 10 euros, depending on the condition of each visitor.
From Monday to Saturday, children from 4 to 15 years old must pay 4 euros approximately to enjoy the tour with entrance included, while students pay around 5 euros and the rest of the adult public must pay to enter at least 6 euros.
On Sundays the prices go up a little, with the price of the guided tour including entrance for children between 4 and 15 years old at approximately 6 euros. Students have to pay around 8 euros and the rest of the public who want a guided tour have to pay at least 10 euros each.
Private tour
In the case of the private tour, the conditions change a bit because it will be a tour that is aimed at groups of people, family or friends travelling together. If this is your case, then this will be your best alternative, paying for a joint ticket and enjoying a personalised and completely private tour of the entire Alcazaba complex.
In this case, prices may vary according to the size of the group, being sectioned into three prices: one for small groups, one for medium-sized groups and one for large groups.
If you go with a small group of family and friends you can pay approximately 85 euros per group. They have to attend between one and four people, no more than that amount. If you are a group of between 5 and 12 people, then the guided tour including entrance will cost 130 euros per group.
For larger groups ranging from 13 to 25 people, then the entrance fee plus guided tour per group is 185 euros. In all cases the tour lasts between one and one and a half hours.
School tour
This is especially aimed at groups of children and schoolchildren, so it is not the kind of tour that is accessible to tourists. But I will explain how it works. In this type of school tour you have to pay between 6 and 10 euros per student.
In this case, the payment depends not only on the number of students but also on the type of tour. There are three ways to visit the Alcazaba on these school tours. One of them is with dramatised visits, another is a historical and cultural tour and the third type is with gymkhanas included.
Each of the different ways of touring the site is available for certain age groups. But in any case, the prices of each of the practices vary depending on the number of children in each group. The historical and cultural visits are priced at approximately 6 euros for more than 50 pupils and around 8 euros for less than 50 pupils.
The dramatised visits cost at least 8 euros per child in the case of groups of 50 or more children, and the cost will be 10 euros per child in the case of groups of less than 50 children. The gymkhanas have the same price as the cultural visits.
Entrance fees to the Alcazaba of Malaga in high season vs. low season
Prices are always the same in any season of the year. In the Alcazaba there is no price distinction because the monument is visited during the busiest season of the year during the time when the city is deserted.
This is a great advantage because it means that it will always be a good option to include in your top 10 things to do in Malaga, without thinking about whether it will be a cheaper or more expensive activity than at other times.
How to save when visiting the Alcazaba of Malaga?
One of the best ways to save on a visit to the Alcazaba is without a doubt to go on Sundays when the entrance is free, but this has its disadvantages and that is that you will still have to pay for a guided tour if you want someone else to explain everything about the place you are visiting.
If you decide to go on a guided tour, I recommend choosing the shared tour instead of the private one, because it basically offers you the same experience except that on this tour you will be able to share with other people outside your tour group. And without a doubt, the savings are remarkable, considering the general price of a normal guided tour is 10 euros.
Another thing you should know is that to get to the Alcazaba, you can also buy a Malaga tourist bus card, which will take you to some of the most important places in the city, including this pair of monuments. I recommend you to look for information about this tourist bus that will save you money on your visit to the city and the Alcazaba.
Can I get free entry to the Alcazaba of Malaga with a tourist card of the city?
MalagaPass is the card that takes you to explore different corners and iconic places all over the city, and of course the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle cannot be left out.
Among the advantages that this card offers you is the possibility to buy it in advance and activate it whenever you want. The Alcazaba, Gibralfaro Castle, the Roman Theatre and many other iconic structures of Malaga, whether from modern or Islamic Spain, are just some of the interesting places to visit.
When you buy this card you will be able to enter for free to all the places I mentioned before and also to many others which are detailed in the list of places on the card. You will also be offered an explicit map of each of the places to visit and a considerable discount in the places and establishments identified with the MálagaPass sticker.
