Step by Step

Climb aboard one of America's oldest battleships and learn about its history and operation. The USS Iowa was built in 1943 and is the only one open to the public on the entire West Coast. The ship entered active service in the midst of World War II, in which it took part, and has served the military in wartime operations in both the Korean War and the Cold War.

Accompanied by a free mobile app, you can learn about the operation and history of the battleship. You'll tour the interior and walk the deck, while enjoying views of the busy Los Angeles harbour .

You'll also have the opportunity to hear stories of veteran Marine service and learn lots of fun facts about the battleship and the U.S. military.

In 1943, the USS Iowa transported US President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Tehran, where he met at a famous conference with Winston Churchill and Iosif Stalin. To accommodate the president, who suffered from polio, a lift was built inside the ship to allow him to get on and off. It is also the only warship in the country with a bathtub, also placed inside for the president's comfort.

In 1944, the ship made its combat debut in the Marshall Islands campaign against the Japanese Imperial Army. After more than 40 years of service, the USS Iowa was decommissioned in 1990, after 47 of her crew were killed in 1989 when one of her turrets exploded.

Good experience, although I expected a bit more from the tour, I wasn't really disappointed. It's worth going once, you learn a lot more than you think you will.
