Step by Step

This offer includes tickets to two major attractions in the city: the Papal Palace and the Saint-Bénézet Bridge, also known as the Avignon Bridge. It does not include a guide, although at the first monument you will have a tablet with augmented reality and 3D animations. In addition, you will enter without queuing, a very important factor as it is one of the most visited monuments in France. When booking, you must indicate a time slot to determine the entrance to the Palais des Papes.

The Papal Palace is a large Gothic building. It is located in the heart of the historic centre, a stone's throw from the Basilica of Saint-Pierre, and was home to nine popes during the 14th century. It actually consists of two separate buildings - Vieux Palais and Palais Neuf - which house such fascinating rooms as the cloister, the Hall of the Stag and the courtyard of the Grand Chapel (Loggia).

The building has an enormous surface area and is filled with frescoes by great artists. The chapels of Saint-Martial and Saint-Jean are two of the best examples, and the works inside illustrate the lives of the saints. If you wish, you can also add a visit to the surrounding gardens.

After the visit to the Papal Palace you can visit the Saint-Bénézet Bridge, which stands on the ruins of a Roman building. According to legend, it was built by a local shepherd who received a divine inspiration. It used to connect the two banks but, due to the flooding of the river and the enormous maintenance costs, it was abandoned in the 17th century. Today only four arches and a small chapel remain.

Ten out of ten, I learnt details I didn't know about Avignon. The Palace has an architecture that borders on art, as well as the bridge. There is a lot of green in the place, you really enjoy the landscape and the history of it. At least I enjoyed it a lot!

Avignon has a unique beauty that is complemented by the most historically important things it has to offer. I have no doubt that the papal palace has been home to several popes, it is an incredible place in every way. The bridge is equally impressive.
