A bit of historical background
According to historical records, Italica was the birthplace of at least three Roman emperors: Trajan, Hadrian and, quite possibly, Theodosius. It is considered to be one of the earliest Roman settlements in what is now Spain; it is estimated that the city was founded around 200 BC.
During the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, and during the rule of Trajan, this important Roman enclave reached a high social and military status, as a boost for its ruler and his successor Hadrian. During this period, the city reached a population that then exceeded 8,000.
On a trip to visit the ruins of this important city you will see one of the largest amphitheatres of the Roman Empire, with a capacity for 25,000 spectators. The amphitheatre space has been beautifully preserved over the years. You can also see the remains of the temple of Emperor Trajan, the ancient Roman baths and a series of beautifully preserved mosaics. In 2016 part of the seventh season of the famous series Game of Thrones was filmed in Italica.
