Step by Step

This tour departs from Avignon in a comfortable , air-conditioned minivan. The tour lasts approximately 6 hours and includes an expert guide who will tell you the history and anecdotes of the following locations:

  • Pont du Gard - Monumental Roman aqueduct across the river Gardon. It was built around 50 BC to bring water to the city of Nîmes. The yellow stones blend in with the surrounding nature, creating a relaxing landscape. The stage lasts about 1 hour and includes the entrance to the monument.
  • Les Baux de Provence - A splendid town perched on a rocky hill surrounded by the Alpilles Natural Park. Despite its small size, it contains monuments of great beauty such as the Romanesque church of Saint-Vincent, the castle or the Porte d'Eyguières, the old access to the town. You usually have about 2 hours to visit Les Baux on your own.
  • Saint-Remy de Provence - Known as the birthplace of Nostradamus and the place where, despite his brief stay, Van Gogh painted many famous pictures. The Dutch artist stayed at the Monastery of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, which at the time was an insane asylum. If you want to learn more about his Provençal period, you can visit the Musée Estrine, which has a multimedia space that tells the story of his life.
  • Glanum - A short distance from Saint-Remy is this ancient city founded by the Celts/Ligurians and later conquered by the Romans. The archaeological site consists of thermal baths, forums and temples.

The excursion is suitable for everyone, but it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and clothes, as there is some walking involved. To protect yourself from the summer sun, it is also advisable to bring a hat and sun cream.

The hours flew by, I would have liked to stay a bit longer in all the places. I honestly liked the tour quite a lot, it was comprehensive and the guide taught me a lot about the history of everything. From my point of view the ruins of the medieval castle of Baux and the Pont du Gard aqueduct were the best things to see.

One of the best excursions we did in France. I think this tour gave me a great understanding of the history of France in general. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence seemed to me the most cultural of all the places, the guide was fabulous too. He knew a lot about everything!
